Scarce final-book-in-series boys' book: "The Mercer Boys and the Steamboat Riddle" [c.1933] A.L. Burt Last book #10 Early YPA novel
This is a "very good" vintage hardcover in red cloth wrapped boards published in the mid-to-late 1930s by A.L. Burt Company, 356 pages, a glossy black and white frontispiece. This is the last title of the series, copyright 1933. This copy matches the format of the second printing format run A.L. Burt did for this series. I have not been able to uncover documentation that details whether Burt printed all 10 in the original format, or only part of the run, and then the rest in this format. So, this could be a first edition. I do not know. It is a scarce title with only two like it listed in the World Catalog of libraries. Binding is tight, the hinges and gutters are strong. No loose, torn or folded pages. Aside from an original owner name - "Ross Hudson" penciled neatly on the front paste-down, no writing. The board corners are lightly bumped, along with the spine head and tail, but the cloth is pretty much untouched, showing little to no signs of wear. The text block closes tightly all around, uniform in color around, no significant stains, spots, blemishes or the like. Internally, the pages may show just the slightest hint of tanning at very edges. Back cover shows a couple of spots that look to be moisture exposure (?), but the cover is still far cleaner than most of the genre of this age. Really, a rather stunning copy of a fairly scarce title, being the last in a short lived series of boys adventure series books. See accompanying image for full condition details.
