"The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1888 by Houghton Mifflin of Cambridge, Boston.

Octavo in in decorated green cloth wrapped boards, semi-glossy illustrated frontispiece with rice paper guard page, two color decorations on the front board, gold leaf lettering on the spine, 312 pages.

This is a "good plus" or better antique hardcover. The front hinge is split about 1/2 length but is still fairly strong, the back hinge is fully intact. There are no loose, folded or torn pages. Aside from a lightly penciled gift inscription dated 1891 inside the front free end paper (see accompanying images), there is no writing. The text block closes tightly and is square. The upper edge is tanned and a little spotty, the outer and lower edges being relatively uniform and fairly scuff free. The board corners are bumped with some edge wear. The spine head and heel are bumped with some wear, but not frayed. A few spots on the front cover cloth, a little surface wear on the back. The decorations on the front a crisp, and the gilt lettering on the spine also is crisp, bright and complete.

A very pleasing antique copy of an important American title. Relatively scarce edition.

Will ship promptly, carefully packaged and fully insured.
