By Nancy Willard, illustrated by David McPhail, published in 1974 by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.

First edition printing from the late author's private collection in Poughkeepsie New York.
This Anatole book was awarded the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1977, designating it belonged on the shelf next to Alice in Wonderland. This is a copy from the author's private collection from her studio work space! Honest truth. I live about an hour's drive from where Miss Willard's family home is one block away from Vassar College where she taught for decades. I advertise online that I buy quality children's books, and so in June of 2019 I received a voice message from the late Miss Willard's husband saying that he had various titles remaining from the stock her publishers had given her over the course of her career whenever a book went to print.

8vo, white cloth wrapped boards, linen endpapers and paste downs, profusely illustrated with black and white drawings, 72 pages.

This is a "very good" to "near fine" vintage hardcover that Miss Willard received from her publisher upon the book's printing. It has been in her private work space until June of 2019, and is very likely unread. The board corners are crisp and not bumped, the hinges tight, no writing. The white boards do have a little tanning and some light speckles in places from aging and there is a little dusting to the top of the edge block.

The vintage dust jacket shows the original publisher's price of $5.95 inside the front flap. A tiny bit of edge wear and faint little rubbing at the flap fold corners, otherwise very crispy indeed!

Mrs. Willard was awarded the John Newbery Medal Award for "A Visit to William Blake's Inn" and wrote more than 65 other books including the award winning Anatole trilogy. She passed away in 2017.
