This is a "very good -" vintage book club edition in yellow over black paper wrapped boards with an orange tinted upper text block edge and a deckled outer edge, 188 pages, 04H gutter code.

The binding is tight, the front gutter is cracked but not loosened, back gutter intact. No writing, no torn, loose or folded pages. The board corners are square, not bumped. Tinting on top of block relatively uniform, two small, light spots and a little sunned near the spine. Approximate 2" scratch in the surface of the front boar, in the same place where the jacket is sliced and torn.

The matching jacket is not great, has a long slit 2/3rds of the way up the front going from more than half to the spine and around a bit. There is a loss and a 1" closed tear. There is also a loss at the back cover spine edge at the top. The jacket is protected and stabilized in a removable archival sleeve.

Look closely at the accompanying images to make sure you are good with the presented defects. It is not a perfect book, but because of how early it is, I decided it was still worthy to list.

The book club books generally do not print the year of printing in them, just the initial copyright from the trade version. That said, some book club editions actually are "first editions" because the book club printing was released prior to the trade copy being in the book stores. That generally happened with the most frequency in the science fiction genre more than any other. Somewhere there may be documentation for this book on the gutter code, which normally has to do with when the book was printed and what printing, but I could not find such data, I conclude it is an early edition because of three factors: The double paper covers, the tinted text blocks and the fact that it has cloth head and tail bands in the binding. By the later 'sixties, so as to keep the cost of printing down, book club editions had dropped these niceties.
