J.R.R. Tolkien "The Fellowship of the Ring" First edition of 1967 Second/revised edition
Published in 1967 by Houghton Mifflin.
8vo cloth wrapped hardcover, cloth head and tail band in binding, tinted upper edge, 423 pages. This is the first printing of the second edition, which has Tolkien's revisions that he conducted so as to retain his copyright which was being disputed by another publisher.
This is a "good plus" vintage hardcover. Former library with mark on the spine, school stamp on the verso and page 33, and ghost of library pocket on rear free end paper. Both the front and back boards show ghosts top and bottom edge where at one time the jacket must have been adhered (see accompanying images). The spine is intact although weakened at the back where the hinge is cracked between the first and second end paper. No loose, torn or folded pages. No marks aside from those mentioned. The text block closes tightly and is square. The tinting on the upper edge somewhat spotted and shows a small moisture mark near the spine. The outer and lower edges are mildly rubbed. The gold foil decorations on the spine and front board are bright, crisp, not rubbed or faded. There is no map in the back and doesn't appear to have ever been present.
The original dust jacket shows the original publisher's price of $6.00 inside the front flap. Hand marked library mark on lower portion of the spine in white. Some wear at the top edge of the spine with some chipping and small losses. All flap fold corners are lightly chipped. Some light surface wear overall, uniform in color, spine does not appear sunned. Now protected in a removable archival sleeve for proper protection and presentation.
