Dashiell Hammett "The Maltese Falcon" First edition Modern Library early printing
"The Maltese Falcon" by Dashiell Hammett, published by the Modern Library in 1936.
8vo balloon-cloth wrapped boards, Rockwell Kent designed paste-downs and free end papers, 267 pages.
This book is in the first edition format first published by the Modern Library for this book in 1934. We are able to date this copy to 1936 by looking at the list of Modern Library Giants titles in the very back of the book. The last one listed is #30, and as per Toledano's Modern Library Guide, that book was first published in 1936.
This is a "good" or better book with an intact, but weak spine. The hinges are not cracked but they are somewhat frail. The spine is cocked, meaning that when the book is lying flat, the boards do not line up - in this case the front board over hangs the back cover by a bit. The spine cloth is sunned and has some splits in places. The board corners are bumped and worn at the tips. There is a name neatly penned on the front paste-down (see accompanying images). There are a handful of names and accompanying dates penned on the last page of the novel - an informal lending perhaps?
Not a perfect book, but a title you don't see too often anymore in this early printing. Will make for a great gift for a Hammett or Bogie fan!
