Gothic wall art steampunk poster, "Asylum Doorway", made-to-order wall hanging.

In 1871, New York State opened the "Hudson River Hospital for the Insane" in Dutchess County, on the East banks of the Hudson River, just below what is know known as Hyde Park.

It was the second institution of it's kind in the state, being created since the original hospital in Utica, New York, was full.

The High Victorian Gothic architecture was the first time it was used in an institutional facility. The building, although in a state of significant disrepair, is now on the National Historic Register.

I took this photograph in 2007, intrigued by how the door had been "retrofitted" with a "modern" portal and the ominous "asbestos" warning.
