This is a "very good" antique leather bound book with gilt on all sides of the text block, combed paper endpapers, a ribbon placemark sewn in, published in 1882 by Porter & Coates, 537 pages including an index.May be a first edition, but no way to know with certainty as this publisher did not use any particular method to note editions.Binding is solid, not cracked or weak. There is a gift inscription, upside down in the back free end paper - apparently the writer mistakenly had the book backwards when he wrote the inscription, other wise no apparent writing. Text block is square and closes tightly, gilt edges bright and relatively unmarred all around. Board corners are bumped and the leather is worn through at the tips. There is 1 1/2" closed tear on the outer edge of one of the front endpapers, otherwise I noted no other tears. No loose or folded pages.See accompanying images for full condition details. This is a wonderful tome - the illustrations are quite striking. Will ship promptly, carefully packaged in a box.
