"Tarzan and the Golden Lion" by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset and Dunlap in 1943.

This is a fun World War II era printing of the ninth book in ERB's Tarzan series.

It was original published as a serial in Argosy magazine in 1922 and then in book form by A.C. McClurg and Co. in 1923.

It appears from my research that this edition shares the same cover art as the original printing.

Further, we are able to identify this book as the first state of the Grosset and Dunlap "Madison Square" wartime editions as the jacket has a synopsis of "The Beasts of Tarzan" on the back flap (later printings featured "Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar") and lists 30 titles on the back cover, whereas the later jackets had 32 titles. (Points noted are as per Dr. Robert Zeuschner's Edgar Rice Burroughs Bibliography, 2016.)

This book and jacket are pretty well beat up with apparent moisture exposure and damage to both, as seen in the images. That said, the binding is solid, the cover gutters are not split, there is no writing in the book, no torn or loose pages, so the book is still readable.

The cover has a significant loss at front cover lower corner and a smaller one at the back (again, see images), but it is all in one piece with no significant tears. The inside front cover flap states "Madison Square" and has the wartime G&D statement about being unabridged, thus helping to date the printing. There is a pen inscription on the front cover above the "Z" in Tarzan "1924" and penciled symbol in front of the lion. The jacket is now carefully preserved in an archival, removable sleeve for proper care and presentation.

While not a perfect book by any means, it is priced accordingly and is still a cool way to have a vintage copy with its original jacket.
